Fired Up Friday April 26

Nashville Half
It’s here. The start of my race season. Tomorrow is my first half marathon of 2013: The Country Music Half Marathon, a.k.a. Rock n Roll Nashville. On the one hand I’m excited because I know I trained well, this is one of the largest half marathons in the U.S., and I might be a tad obsessed with Nashville lately thanks to the TV show on ABC. On the other hand, this is not going to be pretty; I’m just getting over a cold and can barely breathe through my nose let alone move 10 paces without blowing my nose, and, oh yeah, it’s going to be raining the whole time. Argh! I guess half marathon number five, it was bound to rain on me sooner or later. Any tips for wet weather running?

So that makes this Fired Up Friday extra important because I will need extra motivational music to get me through. Thankfully, I have the new Fall Out Boy album locked and loaded on my iPod. I was knew as soon as I hear it that “My Songs Know What You Did in the Dark” would be my theme song for this first half marathon of 2013. Even when I’m not running and I hear this song, I can feel my feet pounding on the pavement. It lets me block out everything around me. Let’s hope that includes rain and mucus on Saturday.

Goal time : anything < 2 hours

Tomorrow is T-Minus three weeks to my first half marathon of 2013: the Country Music Half Marathon a.k.a. Rock n’ Roll Nashville. It’s the day after my birthday. Felt like a good way to celebrate. Plus, it means I can eat an entire Publix cake if I want to. That’s redhead math for you: one half marathon = one marble Publix cake.

I’ve been running double digits the last two weekends and this Sunday is scheduled to be 11.5, so you better believe I’ve been loading up my iPod with new music. No, not country music, which I generally don’t like, but I am addicted to Nashville on ABC and own the soundtrack. It would rock my world if the cast of Nashville was at the marathon. They should be handing out the medals. I’d want a sweaty, exhausted, no makeup picture with Gunnar and Scarlett, and Rayna and her girls. But not Teddy Conrad or Peggy Kenter. Boooo!

But anyway, speaking of jilted lovers, right now this song gets me jacked!

Sometimes I can’t tell if working out is an escape from the responsibilities of the real world, or a responsibility that weighs just as heavy. I’ve been looking for a new apartment for the last two weeks, on the opposite side of town, so every time I went to look at a place (and I looked at more than a dozen) it took at least 40 minutes to get there and 40 minutes to get back. This combined with work, taxes, various appointments, preparations for moving, etc., have made the last two weeks a bit of a whirlwind.

Trying to fit in time to workout has felt like a chore in and of itself. Each time my alarm went off this week, I would immediately start telling myself that I had too much to do today and should skip the gym and just pop open my laptop instead. Most of the time spent at the gym was not relaxing, but frantic, like I had to get this over and done with so I could shower, answer emails and then go look at that next condo.

However, if I feel guilty being at the gym instead of at my computer, then I guess that really does make spin class, the pool, the ellipitical, an escape from the “real” world… even if my legs are REALLY sore the next day.

Whilst on the elliptical this week, I had this gem roll through my shuffle mode and I damn near pulled the handles off he machine I got so into it. It’s not new by any means, but it may be new to you. Beyonce is the shit. Beyonce remixed is cray. Download the Christian Davies remix of Countdown and go HAM on that elliptical.

Since yesterday was Valentine’s Day, let’s pick a love song for Fired Up Friday. Since P!nk’s new album is “The Truth About Love,” that seems to be a good place to start. Oh yeah, and because I’m going to see her in concert on March 1 (I bet you wish you had friends that gave you such awesome Christmas presents). Since it’s only love we’re talking about I pick “Timebomb.” It immediately stuck out as one of my favorite songs from the album. It’s simple, it’s a silly thing, throw it away like a boomerang. It’s only love, not a timebomb, ok?

I may have done a silly thing. After slacking on CrossFit for three weeks, I went back and have gone every single day this week. I sort of can’t move. Have you ever tried something on that was too small in dressing room and then panic because you can’t get it back over your head? That’s been my dilemma all week when it comes time to change clothes. I may need to invest in more button downs and zip ups.  My current state of muscle paralysis should make running a 10K tomorrow interesting.

Though my weights are embarrassingly puny compared to my fellow CrossFitters, I’m still pretty proud that I’ve been able to lift it, push it, press it, swing it and snatch it this week. All that soreness means muscle is building and when muscle is building my metabolism is shredding up the beer, peanut butter, chocolate and donuts. Wow. Note to self: a peanut butter donut with chocolate glaze and a beer sounds like a pretty breakfast.

In honor of a week’s worth of CrossFit, today’s Fired Up Friday is T.I.’s “Ball,” because obviously you’re a baller if you can’t lift your arms above your chest.

CrossFit remix: This box so packed, these quads so drunk, this WOD so stacked, these delts so junk 😉

Confession: I’ve been slacking. As previously noted, the last two weeks have been a bit hectic. There have been a lot of late nights, forcing me to skip evening workouts, but also causing me to lose sleep, sleep through my alarm and miss my morning classes. It’s a vicious cycle of hating myself. That and I stuck my finger in a blender which means kickboxing and weight training is extra painful. Yeah, I was making a smoothie and thought I could flick that errant wad of spinach into submission… I was wrong. Thankfully, I have a crap blender (hence the errant wads of spinach) and not a kickass VitaMix or Blendtec, otherwise I’m pretty sure I would have lost a finger instead of a nail.

To kick my own ass, on Saturday, no matter what the weather, I’m going to run eight miles.

And in honor of all the decisions that have been keeping me up at night (some are even about cake), today’s song is Decisions by Borgore. And I do want the whole cake.

That little Fired Up quotable up there is for my friend Lauren who did her first 15K last weekend; had never run that distance before, was contemplating changing to the 5K and damned if that girl didn’t stick to her guns and finish the 15K in well under two hours. I think she might be considering a half marathon soon… It’s amazing what our bodies can do if we tell ourselves we can do it and push.

The Hot Chocolate 15K was pretty fun. Atlanta has some fierce elevation changes, so the course was tough. I finished in 1:25.03, which is under 1:30 like I wanted and put me 104 out of 743 in my age group. Not too shabby.

This song makes me sing. Not sing really, but it makes me whoop. I love that dirty bass -whoop! whoop!- Do you have songs that make you do that while you’re running and working out? I’m not going to lie, some songs make me break into a dance-run. I’m lucky I haven’t broken a leg yet on that one.

Side note: I find these dudes creepier than LMFAO. Just sayin.

Holy cow, did you see it’s going to be in the 70’s in Atlanta this weekend? That’s a good thing, because this weekend I am running. Shocker, I know, but I mean I’m running in an actual race this time: the Hot Chocolate 15K. It’s a traveling race that raises money for the Ronald McDonald House Charities. I signed up for it because it ends with food of course. A big bowl of hot chocolate and chocolate fondue! I might not even need it if it’s going to be that warm. So what will music will be powering me up the hills of downtown ATL? Definitely the new Ke$ha album. I’m almost embarrassed to admit that so far my favorite song is “Gold Trans Am”…

It’s hard to be fired up this Friday. Not because it’s cold, not because the holidays are over, not because I want to keep sleeping in and eating cookies. Nope. It’s hard to be fired up because this is the time of the year when there is a wave of hopeful people descending upon the gym taking up my parking spaces, my lockers, my elliptical, my weights and my space in the group fitness studio. Yes, I said ‘my.’ I am an only child. I assign possession to many things that technically don’t belong to me, but are in fact mine. Mine!

Some tips, if I may, for those with a fresh gym membership card:

  • Just say no to matching track suits and anything that says “PINK” on the butt.
  • Keep your phone in your locker unless it is how you listen to music.
  • If you can do 20 reps faster than you can do 20 jumping jacks, you need more weight.
  • You need to arrive BEFORE the group fitness class starts, not at the exact start time or five minutes after. When the equipment is gone and the place is packed, you’re SOL.
  • Please don’t sit or hang on a machine while you chit chat with your buddies for 30 minutes.
  • If you bought your shoes at Payless, they are not appropriate for running on the treadmill.

Yes, I’m a gym bitch. My final tip is to put some Cazzette – Beam Me Up on your playlist.

Since Monday is New Year’s Eve, I figured I should provide some party music for Fired Up Friday. Confession: I’m not a fan of New Year’s Eve. I’m not huge on parties, especially ones at bars that charge covers because it’s NYE and are packed and it takes forever to get a drink. I went to see Girl With the Dragon Tattoo last year for NYE with a bottle of champagne in my purse. If it was still playing, I’d go see it again. I’m currently lacking a partner in crime in ATL as well, which gives me a lack of motivation to socialize. You know what does make me want to party? This song. You damn well better believe any party I go to is for the bitches and the drinks. Sing it Trey!

PS – don’t forget to work out. There’s no such thing as Diet Champagne.
